LA Fitness facilities vary based on the location. There's one on the south side that I understand seems like a night club. Some have steam rooms, but most don't. I don't recall seeing a pool in any of the ones that I have visited. The group classes, though frequent, are pretty limited in variety. The upside is that the locations are all over the place so you can pretty much squeeze in a workout no matter where you are in town. Also, it's inexpensive; it was $29.99/mo last year, but I don't know if that was a limited time offer or not.

Lifetime Fitness which I have only visited twice is definitely upscale in that it has all the bells and whistles. Sports, things for children to do, massages, food, salons, etc. You could pretty much spend an entire day there and not get bored. Everything is like a la carte; they could use an all inclusive package.

Your preference will depend on your needs. If you're totally self-sufficient, then LA Fitness would be fine because basically you're on your own. Lifetime Fitness is more accommodating on the surface but not really unless you want to hire a personal trainer.

Honestly, I never thought I'd say this but I like the YMCA the most. The variety of classes for all ages is outstanding, and I didn't even like classes before joining. The thing that really sold me is the tracking system - not only for number and type of workouts, but when I get on the resistance training machines, I can see what my seat settings should be, the weight I should be using, and how many reps per set. That sold me.

The LA Fitness near me has a pool and several others do as well. LA Fitness has also purchased other gyms in the area which is why they can vary by location. There are so many locations throughout the Atlanta area, they are not all kept up to the same standard. It might be just a timing issue but you can find one recently renovated or built and another that is looking in need of the next renovation.

If you are a family, Lifetime Fitness wins out over LA Fitness because it gives the wide variety that you find in a YMCA or Country Club. If you are single and you just want to get in and out for your workout, LA Fitness is more cost efficient.

It's basically like a Chevy Malibu vs. Mercedes S500.

In a nut shell -
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

LA Fitness are medium size facilities with an adequate mix of of cardio equipment, weight machines and free weights.

LA Fitness typically has a single small lap pool.

LA Fitness usually has a small sauna.

LA Fitness has a small play area for kids.

LA Fitness has limited hours, especially on weekends.

LA Fitness may or may not have a basketball court.

LA Fitness has limited classes.

LA Fitness may or may not have a smoothie (protein shake) bar.

LA Fitness has medium sized locker room facilities with "cringe" carpeted locker rooms (my pet peeve).

LA Fitness is a just another rat in the maze feel.

LA Fitness can be really cheap if you are willing to lock in for three years.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Life Time facilities are huge with a vast array of cardio equipment, weight machines and free weights.

Life Time has multiple indoor and outdoor pools.

Life Time has large sauna / steam rooms.

Life Time has a large well managed kids area.

Life Time is open 24 hours.

Life Time has multiple gymnasiums and even rock climbing.

Life Time has extensive class offerings.

Life Time has a large cafe offering shakes, sandwiches, etc.

Life Time has large locker rooms with free towel service.

Life Time has an exclusive club feel.

Life Time is expensive.

Quality of personal trainers is vastly different btwn the two. LA Fitness personal trainer is like that joke about when your trainer needs a trainer...and most of them are not certified.

It's like a classroom with too many students for the teacher to handle. You don't get personal attention at all. I doubt that it's solely their fault, but I did not even mention their personal trainers because it's not even a real thing.

When I quit Lifetime (I think 3 years ago), it was 60-something dollars a month....I'm pretty sure that nowadays it is $80 or so (for a single person).

Periodically, they run specials for no sign-up fee, etc., but as far as I know, it is absolutely impossible to ever get a break on the monthly dues.

Does anybody know a way to join Lifetime Fitness for lower than the ridiculous normal rate?

The only thing I wish LA fitness had was that it was 24 hours, but I enjoy it as there is one on every side of town, and when I travel most major cities have one.
