A classical office building at West Peachtree Street and Linden Avenue, constructed long ago to house the Life of Georgia insurance company, could soon be demolished by Emory University Hospital.

According to a Special Administration Permit application for the structure at 573 West Peachtree St., Emory hopes to “facilitate timely construction once comprehensive construction documents are completed” on an unspecified new facility to occupy the site.

They have that massive parking lot along Linden to work with and can't figure out a reuse for the building to fit in with it? Pathetic.

With all the new towers being built 2-3 blocks north along this street, we need to preserve our historic buildings to compliment the new glass towers.

Its really hard to retrofit old buildings to hospital use. A whole lot cheaper to tear it down and start over.

With building codes, ADA and electrical requirements, its just not realistic.

I don't think many old office buildings will survive. They aren't economically viable. Now converting 3-4 story old buildings to residential or retail may be feasible, but mid-rise office buildings are tough, even more so with hospital use.

Brutalist architecture complements nothing.

I wish they'd tear it all down. Bravo, Emory!

Except this isn't an example of brutalist architecture.

What would you call it?

I'm no architect, I just call every ugly square building with ugly windows brutalist.

Classical or modern classical, depending on the source. The brutalist style came into being in the mid-20th century whereas this building was built in the 1930's. http://www.atlantatimemachine.com/do...trial_life.htm
