serious question, what is "historic" about it? Or is it just old?

I certainly don't want Atlanta getting any more of the all-glass buildings, which I think look bad & don't age well, but is this building any better?

The fact that Atlanta doesn't have as many historic/old buildings left as it should have should be reason enough to preserve it, but the linked articles in this thread provide more information about it.

As to the building in question, I really can't see what the fuss is about. There is some interesting Beaux-Arts detail on it, but I don't find it particularly distinctive.

Does a building have to be "particularly distinctive" to be worthy of preservation? I think buildings that do a good job of blending into the backdrop can be just as valuable as standouts.

I think that architectural distinction and historical significance should in most cases be the primary criteria for preservation, yes.
