Considering relocating in a year or so back to Atlanta from Tampa, hoping to work at Emory area (Clifton). Lived in Atlanta many years ago in Midtown, but the whole city has changed as have we, we now are family of 4. We looked at North areas - Acworth and Roswell for schools (middle and high), but am extremely concerned about commute. Any suggestions? The areas intown we looked at - in the Druid Hills High area - the houses we could afford are a lot smaller than we would want. Husband would be looking for IT, which I gather from boards is varied in location across the city, but more in the north. Any suggestions - thanks!

Real estate in the Emory corridor is becoming more expensive as we speak...and there will be further change for this area.
I think I would live and work in the same area, particularly since some of the better high schools in metro Atlanta are located in North Fulton, Cobb and Milton counties.
Oak Grove (on Lavista between Toco Hill and Northlake) might be a good fit. Frankly, I think the houses they've been building over there are WAY too big, but if big and close to Emory is what you're looking for, that's where you should be looking.
Roswell or Acworth are long way from Emory. Roswell is probably about a 45 minute commute, Acworth would be much longer, maybe 30 to 40 minutes. However anywhere is going to be a long commute if you chose not to live in Dekalb County. The best areas for you to look at would probably be Johns Creek, Roswell or North Gwinnett. Other posters can give you more specific info on these areas.
BTW Milton is not a county, its a recently formed city in Fulton County.
Agree with other poster about Oak Grove. Also Check out Toco Hills, Tucker, Neighborhoods around Briarcliff near Henderson High School, Decatur and Avondale Estates.
Commute vs size of house and consistent quality of schools is what you almost always have to trade off in Metro Atlanta.. if you work ITP. (inside the perimeter)
that said, what about Peachtree Corners -- specifically the Simpson Elem/Norcross High district -- Norcross High has a greatly respected IB programme...
there are lots of IT jobs in and around Norcross area and I think you could use back roads to wind your way to the Emory area.
City of Decatur (small houses for lots of money, sames as much of Lakeside and Druid Hills clusters) has good schools.

Toco Hill is very close to Emory and also pretty close to Buckhead.
Henderson area would be a pretty easy commute to Emory and probably also to the Perimeter Mall area. One quick note...Henderson is a Middle School now. I don't think there's a Henderson High School anymore. Do those kids go to Lakeside or Tucker High Schools, or somewhere else?
Tucker to Emory is an easy commute. Tucker has houses in all sizes and price ranges. I'm not sure about the traffic heading north on 285 from Tucker, though. That could be kind of rough.
Check out Decatur, Candler Park and Lake Claire. The former (City of Decatur) has its own school system (separate from DeKalb County). The schools are all outstanding. Oakhurst is currently the most affordable part of Decatur. It's fairly diverse (rapid gentrification), there are tons of kids there, and the elementary is top notch. You could get a pretty decent house for under $500,000 if you don't do new construction. New construction is going to be between $600,000 and $750,000 for the most part. Decatur schools include Oakhurst, Clairmont, Winnona (all K-3); Glennwood (4th&5th), Renfroe Middle and Decatur High.
Also, check out Candler Park and Lake Claire. They are more expensive that Oakhurst, but less than Druid Hills. These neighborhoods feed into Mary Lin, Inman Middle and Grady - all excellent schools.
