U.S. Airways direct flight from Augusta to Washington shows popularity early

U.S. Airways started service from Augusta to Washington on July 11. In the first seven weeks, the flight averaged 65 percent capacity. Flight numbers for September haven’t been released, but Diane Johnston, the airport’s marketing director, said they should continue climbing.

A short-term parking lot with an additional 210 spaces opens Thursday at Augusta Regional Airport. The recently completed lot was the second phase of parking improvements to accommodate growing passenger numbers at the airport. A long-term parking lot with 420 spots opened in June. All lots combined allow parking for 1,026 vehicles.

Since June, the airport’s two short-term lots have been closed. Construction continues on the rental car ready and return lot. Plans call for converting the current rental return lot into a credit card lot with 173 spaces, which could be completed next year, Smith said. Changes to the parking plan also include a reserved lot adjacent to the main commercial terminal for no more than 30 frequent fliers.

The proximity of Atlanta and Columbia doesn't really matter anymore. The Delta mainline flights, parking expansions, direct flights to DC, etc were just the beginning. The $7.6 million General Perry Smith Parkway will help attract aviation companies to the 200 acre Augusta Regional industrial park. I bet the direct flights to NYC will becoming very soon.

2.6% growth rate through October 2012..

In recent years, the demand for aircraft parking at Augusta Regional has exceeded the number of available parking spots, airport officials say, forcing air traffic control to redirect flights to other landing sites. The new operations plan coordinates with Daniel Field, Thomson-McDuffie Regional and Aiken Municipal airports to better utilize the combined parking capacity.

Another passenger record at Augusta Regional this year(third in a row).

Airport Growth Could Bring Flights to New York, Dallas, Florida | NBC Augusta 26

This is the airport’s third record breaking year in a row. The total number of enplanements has doubled since 2006. Director of Marketing Diane Johnston said the increased traffic helped them land the direct flight to Washington DC, which began in July. Johnston believes the DC flight is at a more convenient time. Planes have been about seventy percent full and that number is growing.

Augusta Regional’s next goal: direct flights to Dallas, New York and maybe a city in Florida.

Great news, do you have any new updates on a long idea to add a second parallel runway.

I haven't seen anything yet.

They seem to be focusing on attracting direct flights and the Industrial Park at the moment.

While I applaud the Augusta Regional and the Airport commission for bringing us a new DC-bound flight, the problem of canceled and delayed flights to Atlanta and Charlotte remain. A few weeks ago, we were flying out West. Our flight out of Augusta was delayed by over two hours. Thankfully, we were able to catch a later flight out of Atlanta. Our friends were leaving for Denver and had to postpone their departure till the following morning. Personally, for all my important (international, catch a cruise, business meetings, etc) trips, I will continue driving to Atlanta, Charlotte, or even Columbia.

I have yet to have an issue with departure times over several different trips departing from Augusta... it's going to happen from time to time no matter what airport you go to however. It's really not a big deal... I personally would much rather drive 20 minutes home after landing here in Augusta and support the local airport than drive 2.5 hours after landing in Atlanta.
