The upcoming Splost includes $8 million for the new Cancer Center..

I believe GRU wants to raise a total $100 million(50 million from the state), and then spend $63 million($8 million from the city and $4.5 million from the private sector) on the actual construction..

Quote from Mayor Copenhaver

The city’s Mills Campus proposal for GRU: “The university is fully on board. They’ve worked with the city every step of the way.” GRU has promised to put all new facilities in the “city center,” he said. “That is a huge win for downtown.”

I noticed that. That's very, very good news for downtown! With the increased student population downtown as well as the increased police presence thanks to the GRU campus police, this will bring increased business to downtown.

Depends on what you mean by ''downtown''.... The real downtown(CBD) by itself, or the Medical District and the surrounding neighborhoods included.

The increase police presence/student population in Harrisburg won't really help out the Turpin Hill or Bethlehem neighborhood for example..

Harrisburg is the eyesore(can provide nice homes on the side facing Summerville) between the growing areas in the urban core(Medical District, CBD, and Summerville)..

The ongoing revitalization in Laney Walker IMO provides the best chance to redevelop the poorer areas in the urban core(Turpin Hill and Bethlehem)..

Harrisburg is an eye-sore eh? It may be an eyesore on balance sheets for the county because of lax code enforcement and neglect from law enforcement. Thank goodness Sheriff Roundtree is responding to the community's outcry for help. Augusta will thrive despite the ridiculous plans the unelected powers in the Garden City are "developing". Best fit for these old mills? New textile industry. Look to Dalton for an example of this industry's revival. Add to the manufacturing base for the city AND STOP SUBSIDIZING SHOPPING WITH TADS TIFS AND URPS

I would much rather any new industry happen in the suburban areas especially lower populated areas of the metro.

I also would have to contend that a lot of Harrisburg is an eyesore. A lot of houses in that area are in horrible condition with overgrown lawns.
