The $76.5 million, 172,000-square-foot building is part of the university’s strategy to increase its medical school class size from 230 to 300 by 2020 and its dental class from 63 to 100 by 2016. Classes in the new building are expected to begin in fall 2014. The building was named for the late Dr. Harrison after he and his wife gave a $10 million gift to the university that also helped secure $5 million from Augusta-area donors and an $8 million gift from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, school officials said.

$76 million medical commons begun today, and $100 million cancer center begins next year.

Ground was broken Wednesday for the $76.5 million Education Commons next to the $112 million College of Dental Medicine building. The university system’s Board of Regents has voted to recommend $45 million in additional bond funding for a new comprehensive cancer center at GHSU.

The study named

GHSU as the 6th best teaching hospital
University Hospital as the 6th best large hospital
Doctors Hospital as the 3rd best medium size hospital
Trinity Hospital 6th best small hospital

The only city to really out do Augusta was Atlanta.

Construction changes are finally in store for the portion of Laney Walker Boulevard that runs through GHSU's campus. The plan will reduce the traffic lanes from four to two, eliminate street parking and add bike lanes.

The design concept is intended to make this road safer for the estimated 8,500 students, staff and faculty that cross this road everyday. Funded mainly through a Georgia DOT grant, project organizers hope the plan will serve its purpose.

Howard adds the project will make it easier to keep pedestrians safe by cutting back on and redesigning crosswalks. "They'll be elevated, slightly elevated, so it will be obvious. There will be no intermediate block crossing. They'll all be at road crossings," added Wilson.

In addition to the numerous safety features that will be put in place, the university will also add more trees and plant beds to beautify the area. All roadwork is expected to be finished by next winter.

$76 million Medical Commons underway, $1 million pedestrian parking right around the corner, 25 acre development on 15th street coming soon, and $100 million Cancer Center starting at the end of 2013.

The Medical District is definitely going strong in 2013.

The health system is pursuing plans for a $10 million Diges*tive Health Center on the mostly vacant second floor of the old College of Den*tal Medicine building nearby. The system has secured a certificate of need from the state but must get approval from the University System of Georgia’s Board of Re*gents.

The center would be part of a $50 million retrofit to the more than 40-year-old building, which would house administrative functions on both the clinical and university sides, said Phil Howard, the vice president for facilities service.

Another development to support the people who think Augusta is the next Raleigh.

Regents OK renovation of former dental building at GRU | The Augusta Chronicle
The Board of Regents gave the green light Tuesday to a $50 million renovation of the former dental building at Georgia Regents University. The 200,000-square-foot building will get updates to plumbing, heating and electrical systems as well as the installation of a sprinkler system. The rooms will also get touched up for their new occupants, the Digestive Health Center and other clinics on the first floor and offices on the two upper floors.

Medical District = Boomtown

1. $112 million Dental school opened 2011
2. $76.5 million Medical Commons under construction
3. $5 million going towards the existing Cancer Center
4. $1 million Laney Walker pedestrian park coming soon
5. $100 million Cancer Center/crosswalk over 15th coming soon (helping Augusta become home to the 2nd NCI Cancer Center in the state/Emory in Atlanta)
6. $50 million renovation of the old dental school coming soon
7. 25 acre commercial development coming soon

Augusta ranked 2nd in the nation for high tech job growth between 2005-2011, and doesn't seem to be slowing down. I very interested to see the final plans for the Riverfront Campus(GGHF site) downtown and the Summerville Campus.
