These stereotypes about San Marcos need to die already. It's much more family-friendly than the Guadalupe that's for sure. A lot of rowdier types even from San Marcos will go there instead. San Marcos is a very laid-back college town these days and the river here reflects that. Plus it's 25 minutes south of downtown Austin instead of 45.

I have an 8 year old, but we have been floating with him since he was 4, and we used to only take him to the Comal. The Horseshoe on the Guadalupe is pretty short, but the water is very fast. Be sure to have him in a life jacket, and if he goes through the tube shoot just be sure his tube is attached to yours. My son has gone through the chute every time, and been fine, but it is very easy to hop out and walk down a ways and hop back in if you are nervous. We just went down there 2 weeks ago, and the water was perfect! Whole float only took about 90 minutes.
