Dallas is far more tolerant in regard to racial and gay concerns. They celebrate multicultural differences more often too.

This article agrees with you that Dallas is more liberal than Austin.

The culture is like night and day when comparing it to Austin.
Here is another great write up from the perspective of an author who has visited various other cities: Comparing Austin to Miami - Miami Beach 411

I decided to check into this thread just to see what sort of nonsense artsyguy was posting. Austin is very gay-friendly and generally free from racial bigotry as an individual trait. Like the rest of America, it suffers the effects of deeply entrenched institutional racism over the entire course of American history.

Just as an aside, I hate the word tolerance in this context as tolerance connotes the idea of feeling negative toward something but putting up with it despite such feelings. I don't understand why when the lexicon of these issues were being determined, the powers that be didn't settle on the word "acceptance." I for one don't "tolerate" I accept differences in people, in fact, I think life is more interesting when such differences are present.... and I live in Austin. But I cannot speak for the rest of the city.

Dallas more liberal than Austin? That's weird | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/3307914.html - broken link)
Whats funny is that article seems to call into question the method used by the "researchers" considering they cite 2004 presidential election results for their rankings
Quote:
Yet in 2004, Republican President George W. Bush carried Dallas County with just over 50 percent of the vote compared to Democrat John Kerry's 49 percent. In Travis County, Kerry easily trumped Bush with 56 percent.
"I would find it hard to believe that Austin is not in the top 25 or 30 liberal cities," said Travis County Republican Chairman Alan Sager.
Mark Nathan, a Democratic political consultant concurred: "I think someone in Berkeley may be one toke over the line."

I had the same reaction. "Tolerance" isn't a particularly good thing, because it can easily revert to intolerance and hostility. What one seeks is acceptance, welcome and inclusivity.
