The 78749 zip code has good schools. Crime is very low around Oak Hill and SW Austin especially West of Brodie Lane. I looked into this in detail when I saw a news report about an increase in crime in SW Austin. It turned out that APD classifies all of South Central Austin in the same district as SW Austin. Almost all of the crime increase was in South Central Austin as I explain in detail in this previous thread. //www.city-data.com/forum/austi...in-2007-a.html

If you are looking for an apartment complex, look for one that is gated or has security. Most of the crimes in the area is theft and burglary, mostly from cars, at apartments and shopping centers.

I think you're in the right place. There is a well-established hispanic community in the Oak Hill/Brodie Lane/Sunset Valley area, and the ESL program at any of the local schools would be okay. The price of housing has been falling in the area for the last couple of years, and you could get a house for 150K that would get your kids into Bowie if you and your family are looking purchase and stay in the area.

Welcome to Austin!

I looked online at student demographics, and Oak Hill elementary has an increasingly hispanic population, so your kids should feel at home

- as of this year, Oak Hill Elementary is 32% Hispanic up from only 22% a few years back, so there are a good amount of hispanic families moving to the area.

Dan Mills would be the elementary school at the Slaughter/Mopac Circle C location. The percentage of hispanic students at Dan Mills Elementary has climbed to around 20% there recently as well, from about 12% a few years ago. I think both areas would suit your needs if you're concerned about transitioning.

Am I missing something? Was the poster looking for a hispanic community? Or ESL programs for them?

Apologies. I was just trying to be helpful - the OP asked about crime and good schools, and his command of english seems limited so I offered advice. Another poster offered up detailed crime info, so I filled in the rest. It looks like the OP has checked out, anyhow.

As for crime, the neighborhood in SW Austin they are referring to may not be the safest, but it's near average according to this website:

The Sunset Valley area the OP is referring to received a 58 score for crime (100 = safest). This is more crime than Shady Hollow (65) or Onion Creek (76) but is by no means "dangerous" per se.

Sunset Valley is NOT the Oak Hill area the OP asked about. It is absured that website lumps the area West of MoPac in with Sunset Valley as Sunset Valley has a higher crime rate because of all the shopping centers located there.

The Oak Hill area is several districts all West of Sunset Valley and all have much lower crime rates then Sunset Valley, their scores are 87 and 96. The area inside the "Y" is not listed on that website but it has even lower crime rates.

I always equated Sunset Valley with Oak Hill as they are both next to the Y.

No they are not, Sunset Valley is East of MoPac. They Y is a long ways West of MoPac.
