Hi all - coming from Denver, where we'd be getting the water out of the lines of the sprinkler system right around now...

Is there a winterization/purge protocol for underground sprinkler systems in houses down here? Are we far enough south not to worry about that? If not, when do sprinkler systems normally get blown out for the winter?

Not for a few more months at least, if at all. I moved back to Texas from Denver abt. 5 yrs. ago.

I'm in Round Rock and I don't winterize - don't know anyone who does. It just doesn't get that cold here and if it does - like last winter - it isn't for very long.

In December 2007 it was in the 70's so you may need to water in the winter depending on temps.

No need. Some people run their sprinklers all year, you don't want it running on a night when it freezes, then it can cause problems but other than that . . . winterize is not something anyone in Austin does! Remember, you are now living at 30 degrees latitude . . . roughly the same as Cairo! (Austin is 30 16 N, Cairo is 30 2 N)

yep, winterize around here means, for some, switching from beer to wine

When I winterize my sailboat, I remove all the short sleeved tee-shirts on it and replace them with long sleeved tee-shirts.

My wife does most of the winterizing of our house. I think it consists of changing some of the decor outside on the patio, and changing the little hand towels in the guest bathrooms to a different color scheme.

I winterize the TIVO by programming College Football and some fall TV series to record. Sometimes I'll switch the thermostat from "A/C" to "Off". Sometimes.

I have no idea what "to winterize" actually means, but I do put down Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall fertilizer every year before the lawn goes dormant.
