So, today it was supposedly 134 heat index in Cedar Creek, according to the news. It got really, really hot in NW Austin today. I know it was over 100 degrees. How hot did your area get?

It's going to be even hotter today. Last night was the first night of the season that I slept without any blankets on me...

Odd. I spent a fair amount of time outdoors and was reasonably comfortable. Of course, I wasn't in Austin proper, just in several surrounding communities.

According to the Weather Underground network of personal stations, nowhere in NW Austin/Cedar Park got over 97, and most were clustered around 94-95.

My experience based observation, is that if we can get to July 1 w/o a 100 degree day, it will be a tolerable summer. Last year, we had already had multiple 100 degree days, which pointed to the miserable summer. The reason is, that the ground acts as a shock absorber. If there is moisture in the ground, it can absorb the heat. Last year, we had dry April and May (when May is our historic high rainfall month). That left no moisture in the ground. Ergo, hot June led to hotter July and August. Indications this year are for a more normal summer -- probably 10-15 100 degree days in total, with most in the 95 range. To me, the PITA factor grows logarithmically as the temp grows arithmetically, starting at 95. At 95, as long as you are in the shade, or in the water, it's OK. At 105, nothing works and all you can do is hide in the a/c.

Of course, there are many regions in the country that have sucky weather for three months at a stretch. The difference is, during our sucky weather, nothing is on the roads that prevents you from getting around.

Hey, I'm just happy we actually got some Spring weather and some green this year before the heatwave set in.

Agreed. I was just thinking to myself yesterday that it did seem pretty warm, but the weather has seemed great so far if you compare it to last summer. I'm pretty sure by the middle of June last year, I was ready for the summer to be over.

I'm not sure where you saw someone saying that the heat index was 134, but, according to a quick Google search:
- 78612 Weather Forecast and Conditions - weather.com

98F right now. Not quite 100F... and with the humidity level where it's at (53%): I cannot imagine it 'feeling' like it is 134.
I've been stuck in a vehicle with six other persons, in Arizona, where it really WAS 120F. No A/C unit.

Sunday morning was the first this year that had no 'refreshing' feel to it. From the get-go, it was stuffy. Then, it just got HOT.

This is the slowest start to summer we've experienced since moving here in '08. Interesting to see some of the record highs occurred the very week we moved here! AND, it only got hotter/drier for the next four summers!

I think we'll 'forget' how easy we had it this 'summer'...along toward the end of this week! I still think this summer season will be the mildest we've seen since '08(hope-hope, knock on wood, fingers crossed ).

Huh? What's that??? Summer hasn't even STARTED yet!?!? Dang! You had to go and remind me!!!
