Not long after the stunning announcement in May that Austin had landed a Formula One race, organizers said they hoped to begin moving dirt by December in order to complete construction in time for the inaugural U.S. Grand Prix race in 2012. Then months slipped by without much happening on the site.Until this week, that is, when groundbreaking finally got under way on the 970-acre tract southeast of Austin

Most excellent. This may be one of the best things to ever happen to this city, and we don't know it yet. It's not just the track, grandstands and anciliary structures. It's the research facilities, high-paying jobs, hotel/tourism revenue, foreign investment, and international attention this sport will bring. From what I can tell, this will become a premier motorsport destination for North America, with other types of auto racing, sportbike, etc. Basically, whatever they can fit into the schedule.

I found this article on the F1 website interesting: Formula 1 United States | Austin 2012 | Forumula 1 ★ Austin (http://www.formula1unitedstates.com/formula1.html - broken link)

It makes one wonder what kind of businesses would be needed other than the existing infrastructure. Looks like opportunity for entrepreneurs.

It should be a boon for Central Texas and complete the transformation from "Austin, Tx" to just "Austin."

Let's hope the track is a radical departure from what's on the circuit now. A race should not be decided by the qualifying b/c passing is non-existent.

But... that's F1!!!

I'll believe F1 will race in Austin when I see it. Who can forget all the other failed F1 sites, like Detroit Speedway, Houston Superspeedway, Maryland Speedway, Tunica (Miss.) Speedway, Alabama Motorsports Park, and New Mexico Motor Speedway. There were also New York City plans 1, 2, 3, and 12, which spanned from Staten Island to the Meadowlands. There were plans for Ohio, Denver, Seattle, Tacoma, Portland and Vancouver. And then there's High Rock Raceway in Spencer, N.C., where they actually did more than break ground, and actually bulldozed the track layout. But, alas, it never happened.

F1 has a tortured, doomed history in the US of so-called "done deals" that never materialized, or worse vaporized before completion.

Sorry, but I won't believe we'll see F1 in Austin until the cars take the green flag.

Huh? The money has been allocated and they're digging dirt on schedule. I told you it would go through... Welcome to Texas !

They aren't "digging dirt on schedule". They took soil samples and called it a groundbreaking. Big difference between the two, and that's not the schedule they originally announced. It's amazing the way the local press is buying the hype hook-line-and-sinker.

If F1 happens in Austin, then GREAT! But you cannot ignore what has happened countless times before. All of those were done deals, too.

I think all the cities you named speak of another time in racing and interest that is present now. Im sure more consulting was done in accordance with those as example of what not to do if your privi to that info. So I see this as a time to ask what if instead of its been done before prove me wong. Plus they didnt have young female drivers bringing in different type of investors that like the appeal of the sport. So this will be a window to go through for this artsy town straddling its past and future everyday. Look at your downtown from ten years ago. Its doubled. The California companies setting up shop and juicing with jobs and the ones showing interest here, will turn this economy into a machine. Invest in the growth. If there is a Gotham City, Austin is it. If they will just build a light rail connection from the convention center to the airport then you could commute to work and catch a flight without having to go back home to get your car to go to the airport to park your car, pay for parking, and you could of had this service. Make sure your votes are for practicality and usage. The city is catching onto the things that matter though. Keep it salty...
