Hi all! I've been reading around here for a while now, but couldn't find an answer to the following question, so I figured I would ask...

I am between jobs right now and living with my parents, but that's looking like it's going to change soon. I am looking for an apartment in north Austin (78753/78758/etc., not too far north). I have a few specific requirements and was looking for other's experience on the subject:

- My price range is somewhere around $800/month.

- I want to avoid bugs as much as physically possible, especially spiders and tree roaches. (would being on the 2nd floor, or higher, help?) I'm actually in therapy for my bug phobia, but it's not helping much... yet...

- If possible, I would like a nice apartment (who doesn't?) with a pool, fitness room, clubhouse, etc.

Bear in mind, I'm not looking for specific complex recommendations (though if you have some, then by all means), I'm just looking for recommendations about locations in Austin that may fit the bill...

Your best bet is to contact an apartment locator service. They are free and will help you narrow down your criteria. Keep in mind that occupancy is very high right now and there are waiting lists for many complexes. Your price point and zip codes unfortunately puts you on the lower (but not lowest) end, meaning you're more likely to find older places (...meaning more likely to have bugs). Sorry but I've never lived in an apartment complex that didn't have them. Best you can hope for is a management company that sprays monthly.

I'm happy to spend a little more, or live in a different area.

What/where would you recommend?

There will be options in that NW Austin area, all of them may or may not have bugs. If you treat the interior before you move in, it'll certainly help things. Going to higher floors really won't make a difference.

I'll second the suggestion of calling a locator service - they're free to you, and will be able to guide you.

For what? You didn't specify what size. 1 BR 1 BA should be no problem, but if you are looking for larger it may limit your choices.

Definitely work with a locator that specializes in that area. See if you can find a midrise apartment building. Generally you'll have fewer problems with bugs up above treetop level.

Sorry, I forgot to specify that in the OP...

Yes, I'm looking for a one bedroom apartment.

Also, to everyone saying to use a locator service, I absolutely plan to. However, I doubt that they will have much experience with avoiding bugs, as most people simply don't care.

So, I am trying to get that info. here from people with experience on the subject, and bring it with me to the locators.

You might be surprised, and - really - it's going to vary even inside a complex. A good locator will know the ones to avoid.

You'll need to determine that by interviewing several until you find one you feel you can communicate with and who will take your concern seriously.
