I mean if he would have admitted long ago, maybe they would have been a bit lenient with him and not strip 10 years of acheivements and titles from him. Maybe he's out of money and needs to restart his life? I don't know but it should be a bit interesting.
Just a clarification - there has never been a trial. Armstrong was subject to arbitration with the USADA. However, in lieu of participating in arbitration he accepted the reasoned decision of USADA.

USADA already has his scalp. It won't be sufficient to merely confess. . .he must come forward to give testimony against everyone who hasn't come forward yet. That has to include Johan Bruyneel and Miguel Ferrari and his other doctors. He must name names, he must give detailed accounts as to how he evaded detection, he must discuss the alleged threats and intimidation and he must shed light on the sport from someone at the very epicenter.

Short of that, I fail to see the value in a "confession".

Well he didn't confess to the LiveStrong staff, he apologized for what they've had to go through and the impact this is having on the foundation. While one might call this an implied confession, from what was reported, there was nothing that could solidly be construed as an admission of guilt.

He is not the youngest anymore. He must be betting on an immediate lift of the ban. He wouldn't do this if he thought the ban would last another couple of years. He'd be too old to really win any competitions where many others are 20 years younger than him.

I don't think this is about competition. This is about a reputation he spent a lifetime building that is now completely tarnished. He can't get that back...but he can build a new brand. He can't though without coming clean. If he comes clean, works to be a positive force in sport, he can live a very comfortable life and not be a pariah. He has a great public personality and skills that will get people on his side again...but not as long as he continues to deny.

I don't think he wants to do this, but he must if he wants to be relevant.
