It is certainly a noticeable difference. Like tildahat says this does lend credence to the argument that a small reduction in vehicles on the road during peak hours can help traffic flow a lot more than you might expect.

That brings sharing a ride to mind.

Well, I guess it really is the combination of all of those things. I just wonder what lessons we could learn and apply that would help the congestion.

One thing...try to spot a car with more than one adult in it. It's rare.

I've carpooled from North Austin (McNeil/Parmer) and now Brushy Creek Road area to 183/Cameron for almost 6 years. It doesn't make the drive any shorter but it does make it more interesting and really helps with the gas cost!

I do, too. I enjoy it. With technology as it is, it would seem easier than ever to coordinate sharing a ride. It would make a difference in the congestion, and with a cost-savings.

Just don't offer to pay for gas, I guess: SideCar sues Austin, saying city can

I saw that in the paper this morning. Doesn't sound like their arrangement would help much. Maybe I'm not understanding how they operate.

I think you mean: don't offer to pay for gas via an unlicensed company that books the ride, employs the driver as an independent contractor, and takes a cut of the fare... excuse me, "donation"

Oh yeah, I'm not saying they're not "really" a taxi company, but...

"Sidecar’s chief executive says the city’s interpretation of taxicab laws is so strict that it would allow police to go after parents who carpool."

That quote stands out. I don't know if it's true, but it does raise some interesting issues. If you use your car to carpool with a friend, and you're always the one to drive and they give you money for it, is that now illegal in Austin? Can they impound your car? I used to be in this exact situation, except I was the passenger paying.
