I just came across this interesting new crime heat map, it is in beta and not every Texas city is included, but Austin is. You can click on each area to see more detail about what crimes have occurred. You can also filter what kind of crimes you want it to show, so you can distinguish areas with a lot of violent crimes from those with mostly property crimes.

Crime Map Beta - Trulia

For total crimes, Downtown, West Campus, and E. Riverside are the most "dangerous" areas! How funny!!

Keep in mind that map is only showing crime for 10 days in May, its probably updated as the APD crime statistics become available.

Downtown and Riverside Drive area East of IH-35 have always been in the higher crime areas of Austin.

That explains the descrepancy between crime stats and the Trulia heat map. West Campus (78705) is one of the top three high crime areas on the heat map, yet doesn't show up in the top 7 list of property or violent crime zips on the posts linked above. Early May - stress from finals, graduation parties, perhaps?

I just noticed at the bottom of the page it says it is getting its data from spotcrime.com. So it is just displaying it in a different manner. I do like the heat map format better. However describing any area as "most dangerous" can be misleading, if you look at the individual crimes many of them in the West campus area are things like theft, burglary of a vehicle, stolen bicycle, graffiti, etc.

So the heat map colors are based on number of crimes per block per year.

And the black dots numbers are based on the most recent 10 days of crimes reported.

so the eastside which has more poverty and lower income areas.

downtown which will always have more bars and clubs and thus more fights and assults, and property crime, a lot of car break in's. same in every large city

and west campus where idiots drunk college boys start fights at times, with other idiots who have no idea how to properly fight. and occasionaly a thug from the "hood" comes over to make drug deals and at times will fight the cocky frat boy. And or the "rich boy" pulls out his hk 45 caliber. And threatens all the other Moderator cut: racist epithet on the block

Default is trulia heat map accurate?

I don't get it. I'm comparing 2 very different areas of Austin (pond springs/turtle rock and ACC riverside campus area) and the 'heat' of the map shows that the areas are similar in crime, but the actual numbers don't match up. Any ideas? I'll go by the numbers, but the coloration is just bugging me!
