I just came across this interesting new crime heat map, it is in beta and not every Texas city is included, but Austin is. You can click on each area to see more detail about what crimes have occurred. You can also filter what kind of crimes you want it to show, so you can distinguish areas with a lot of violent crimes from those with mostly property crimes.

I just noticed at the bottom of the page it says it is getting its data from spotcrime.com. So it is just displaying it in a different manner. I do like the heat map format better. However describing any area as "most dangerous" can be misleading, if you look at the individual crimes many of them in the West campus area are things like theft, burglary of a vehicle, stolen bicycle, graffiti, etc.

so the eastside which has more poverty and lower income areas.
downtown which will always have more bars and clubs and thus more fights and assults, and property crime, a lot of car break in's. same in every large city

is trulia heat map accurate?
I don't get it. I'm comparing 2 very different areas of Austin (pond springs/turtle rock and ACC riverside campus area) and the 'heat' of the map shows that the areas are similar in crime, but the actual numbers don't match up. Any ideas? I'll go by the numbers, but the coloration is just bugging me!
