Here is a map of Austin's 100 largest employers. The biggest cluster is downtown.

But true, if you work at Dell in Round Rock and live on that side of IH35 in Round Rock, you have an easy "commute". But the "average commute" for Austin ranks very high overall for a city our size, all data included.

Steve
In looking at that map and looking at the "largest employers downtown", I wonder how many of the employees of AISD and the Federal Government, for example, actually work downtown. Remember, AISD is one of the largest employers because it employs all of our teachers and everyone else in every school in Austin, most of which are NOT downtown. Headquarters may be downtown, but the vast number of actual employees are not. Likewise with the federal government - the 10,000 or so federal employees in Austin include IRS and postal workers, most of whom are not downtown. Likewise St. David's Healthcare - most of their employees are in the hospitals around the area, the closest of which is NOT downtown. Bank of America, ditto.

Neither my husband nor many of our friends work downtown. They all work for the tech companies in the north of Austin by 183 and Mopac or the east (Samsung). For people who work in those areas, commuting from Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Cedar Park is actually not bad at all. My husband takes about 20 minutes to get to work.

I unfortunately have to work downtown due to the courthouses. Thankfully, Metrorail solves that problem so that my commute isn't all that bad either.
