My wife and I will be moving to Austin soon.

Both of us will be working in South Austin and around both the University of Texas, ACC, and Austin State Hospital.

We are looking for affordable suburbs outside Austin but are easily commutable to our places of employment.

We prefer 2 to 3 bedrooms/2 bath rentals.

We have found a list of places that capture our attention:

Lakeway
Bee Cave
Dripping Springs
Buda (right off I-35 South)

Can anyone make comments on those places?

Hello. Affordable is a word that is different for everyone. What is the price range your are looking at and we can go from there?

Where in South Austin? Which ACC? All of them?

If you work south and central, then live somewhere....south/central. Lakeway and DS are just as expensive, and will add 1+ hour to your commute each day.

Looking at affordable/accessible balance for the places you list, you pretty much have to go with Buda. Possibly Bee Cave, but it all depends on your definition of affordable.

For South Austin, it's on South Congress near Texas School for the Deaf I think.

ACC Rio Grande Campus near UT

I am used to paying $610 monthly for my duplex in Little Rock, Arkansas. I understand that Austin is much more expensive so I am willing to pay $800-$1000 per month.

I am not picky so it doesn't have to be fancy as long it is in a safe area.

That is going to be tough to find a 2 bedroom in that price range unless you are fine with a 20+ mile commute into work.

Kyle/Buda is where I am thinking

You will have to do some MLS searching to find out prices (or talk to a realtor), but a quick look at the listings for Buda show the cheapest rental on the MLS is $1,500 a month for a 3 bedroom 1700 sf home. There are probably a lot of rentals not on the MLS, though, so you would probably have to hunt around some more. And I still think that Buda is probably the cheapest of the areas you listed.

Kyle shows a 2 bedroom duplex (2,000 sf 1974 build) for $1075 (on a 1/4 acre, though!).
