For what they offer, definitely... compared to most of the country though, definitely not.

Bury your head in the sand if you want. If you want to know why Austin is unappealing to minorities, the 1928 master plan is a good starting point. It laid the ground work for Austin to the segregated city that was unfriendly to minorities that it remained for decades after that. It kept black cultural institutions from developing the in city. Its the same reason systemic racism develops in places like the criminal justice system. They dont pop up overnight, they are ingrained for decades.

You ignored every single thing I wrote and wrote basically nothing in return. Actually read Austin's marketing plan. Actually read about how black residents describe Austin. Look at the things they actually advertise, compare them to other cities that are seen desirable for minorities, and if you cant see the difference, you are CHOOSING to be ignorant.

Here is a challenge to you: go onto the General US forum and make your case. Let others from around the country who are minorities (specifically black posters) chime in.

Well, for what it's worth I am black and very much so love Austin... ...but I guess that makes me a minority ... I personally dont see it being any less or more hostile to minorities as any affluent area anywhere in the USA. Your issue is a national issue, not specific to Austin.

Here is the breakdown of population growth in greater Austin from 2013-2018:

White: 108,349
Hispanic: 106,853
Asian: 35,526
Black: 18,455

Of the Asian numbers, about 27k are Indian. That makes sense due to Austin's huge tech scene. Its probably fair to say that they like Austin for that reason.

Austin does have a long history with its Hispanic community and they do have a higher birth rate which explains the growth. We can see in the data that there are a smaller number of people moving in from that demographic vs. the other races and more people being born in Austin in that demographic.

Thats great and the issue is national but it is also specific to Austin (among other cities like Portland, Denver, and Minneapolis).

However, at the end of the day, the data doesn't lie. It is still segregated, the gentrification went overboard, its culture does appeal mainly to white liberals, and it has struggled to attract new black residents.

The argument is made here:

Never said it wasn't an issue in eastern Austin, and I cant confirm if there was such a plan enacted for Austin that early, but it's still much more a national issue than it is a Austin issue. Look at how gentrification is also pushing AA's out of the core of Atlanta for instance, the black mecca. While not an exodus such as what happened in eastern Austin, it's a very real problem as they are being priced out a gentrifying core and the demographics there are changing (more Asians and slowly, more whites).

Gentrification just about anywhere in America is going to shun minorities.

Demographics are quite different from when I moved here in 1959 (father retired from the US Army). Plus the city was lots smaller 180,000+, IIRC - and segregation was still in full force.
My high school (St. Edward’s) was already integrated though.

The best way to solve this on CD is to put together some data and let people air their thoughts. Focusing on many cities, not just Austin. I’ll do that later and throw it on the C vs. C or the general US. I’d love your feedback there.

It is going to push my hippie son out of his home of 18 years before long just south of St. Elmo School.
