If you are new to your house (well, even if you are not), check out any trees that could cause problems....look for dead limbs or older trees that may reach over the roof. It could be a good time to hire one of those tree-trimming companies. We try to have a crew come out every 7 or 8 years, and we are due....and worrying about one of our older trees on the south side of our house . Even if the limb/tree does not break, branches that normally do not come near your roof can rake violently across your shingles and do damge.

Btw, here is a link to the models, so you can tell there are some that are predicting it to go way south or further east.

Remember those straight line winds that came thru Manchaca and Buda in spring 2007. Those winds were estimated to be only 40-50 mph and tore huge elms out of the ground. Live oaks lost lots of limbs and my in laws lost power as trees allover Buda and Manchaca downed electric wires. This should be a bumpy ride or it could be nothing. They have been promising rain for the last four days and I got no rain not a drop. I drove thru rain that others got and was jealous!

Part of the problem in 2007 was that the ground was so soggy that the tree roots had lost footing. I also thought that the downbursts were higher than 50....I know out near dripping they had some 70 mph winds.

You could be right...I just know we didn't have a severe storm with those winds and they only took down the big tall elms no live oaks in Buda/Manchaca. In Dripping it could have been different...I had forgotten about all the rain so it would uproot those very tall trees much easier. Wow 2007 so much rain and flooding…2008 Where is the rain?

It can be like an exceptional thunderstorm but with malicious intent. Depending on the storm's course you can expect up to high winds for half a day or so and lots of rain for a day or two and tornadoes, or anything less.

Just got a call from my Homeowner's Insurance company stating what number to call in case of damages and to follow evacuation plans if necessary.

Just a precautionary message I'm sure, but still alarming.

Exclamation Look For It Near You

If it hits South Texas, then the storm's path will head on up through the Hill Country and Austin, so you folks will get some substantial rains. Stay tuned.

My friend, I'm not even Mark Murray. But, in all seriousness, if you Austinites have been waiting for rain, here's that opportunity. I can't control all the excess baggage that might come with it; if it happens, we'll have to just deal with it and be prepared. But, first, we've got to see where Ike lands. It's still early, and it could happen anywhere along the Coastal Bend or further south.
