According to salary.com, San Joe is 35% more expensive to live, but only gets 25% higher salaries, so I think your salary idea is not really based in fact. I worked in the IT industry in NYC and was rather surprised how expensive top talent is here. I will agree though that people care less about work here, I think its actually what attracts so many people - high wages doing interesting work in a lower cost city with all (or close to) the cultural opportunities of where they came from. I don't mean to knock the SV, but culturally speaking, its just a big suburb with affluent nerds. Why pay so much for that?

I moved down here to go to grad school. I have been actively looking for a job for almost a year. MOst of my classmates have not been able to find jobs, either. The only ones who have had any luck were massage therapists and pilates instructors.

My husband's company is relocating us to Austin so he will have a job when he arrive and I will be looking for one.
