I don't blame them. That mall needs to be torn down and redeveloped!

I know HM was never that great, but has it really gotten that bad? I used to live sort of close by, but have probably been there 2 or 3 times in the 7 years I've been in Austin.

It would probably do much better at the Domain.

Reminds me of the Summit Place Mall in Pontiac, MI.

I lived in Hyde Park about 6 years ago. It was starting to get bad then.

But is it "trendy" enough for the Domain?

Dillards WILL be at the Domain and most of the employees will be from Highland Mall.

Hopefully Highland will be eventually re-developed as a mixed use area like what is happening on the Concordia site and the Triangle. Retail and residential and parks. Zoning changes to make that happen are starting to be put in place. Check back in 10 years.

The second phase of the domain will be less trendy. Stores like Gap, Janie and Jack, Dillards, and Dick's Sporting Goods will be there. It is supposed to be more of an affordable phase. The other phase is worthless to most people in Austin, too pricey, too Dallas.

Aaaah... I remember the excitement in the early 1970s when Highland Mall -- the first indoor, air conditioned mall in Austin -- opened. Everyone predicted the demise of Hancock Center, which was "the" shopping mall at that point. :-)
