I would like to move to Brisbane or the Gold Coast from the US but I really don't want to rent an apartment before finding a job. Extended stay hotels look crazy expensive - are there any other alternatives? My background is client relations/account mgt. and I am an Australian citizen - I've just never lived there. Also can you recommend any recruiters/agencies that might be able to help with my job search? Thanks.

If you don't mind living with other people, then you can try
House Share, Flat Share, Apartment Share | Brisbane Region | Gumtree

Wouldn't that be the same as renting an apartment?

There are tons of furnished condos available for rental on a week to week basis on the Gold Coast. I looked up a place I stayed before right on the beach and it's around $700+ a week during the slower parts of the year.

If you can't afford that, then maybe a cheap motel or hostel instead.

The Gold Coast is not in the best shape economy wise. It's very much depenent on property and tourism. It's property market has been hammered and the high AUD is pricing it out of the market. I noticed they have actually started advertising tourism on the GC on TV in Sydney, haven't seen that in a while.

The official unemployment rate is about 7.5%, well above the national average of ~5%.
