Christchurch is my home town so a little biased, probably drops in the rankings with the earthquakes but probably more interesting for visitors.
Not many towns get to do a "do-over" of their CBD, most cities are a semi organised mess they have to live with. Give it 10 years and she will be the best small city in the southern hemisphere imo, what a shame I don't work in construction :P
Right now id pick Wellington, similar size so still has a good community about it, lots to do.

Christchurch is being modernized so much because of the rebuilding of many old infrastructures. Christchurch is stepping its game finally. Wellington is a beautiful city too, and has more to offer than Christchurch but Christchurch feels much more open for many.
Surprised about some of the cities that didn't make it. Napier/Hastings is the favourite on the North Island and Timaru comes a close second on the south (after Dunedin).
There are so many charming small cities in New Zealand! I think Dunedin and Christchurch are my favorites, of the one I have been to anyway. I hope the reconstruction in Christchurch is going well!
I've only really been to Christchurch and Dunedin (I lived in Auckland when I was a baby though). Both are charming cities, Christchurch feels a bit like England, especially around Cathedral square and the river. Dunedin seems similar to say St. John's, Newfoundland with lots of quaint old houses.

Auckland for me, lots of cultural diversity, some of my favourite places are Grey Lynn,Ponsonby,Parnell.
