The difference is really only skin deep, but generally the GMC's come with either a little more standard equipment or have a more upscale interior trim. In every place that it counts, they are identical.
There really is no basic differences UNLESS you're talking about stepping up to a Yukon DENALI which has considerable differences between the DENALI package and the LTZ package on the Tahoe. Basic packages? No real difference except brand name as GMC is probably a bit more "upscale".
Yeah they are nearly Identical. Wife has a Tahoe but we actually like the front end on the Yukon better so if we get another large SUV, guess it'll be the Yukon.
We liked the Tahoe better on the previous generation, though. Go figure.
Since GMC no longer makes Medium Duty trucks I can see them getting out of GMC light duty as well as they are all just Chevy's now anyway.
The only reason GMC exists is to help dealers offer a full product line. It is simply tied to the old dealer franchises. The idea of merging Buick, Pontiac and GMC was that those brands would have a full line to offer. Now that Pontiac is gone, those brands are down to Buick and GMC and the GMC truck line is an important profit center for those dealers.
I agree that GMC as it is makes little sense until you look at it through the context of the dealer network.

I agree. Without GMC, the dealers would greatly suffer. A stand alone Buick dealership wouldn't do nearly as well as the GMC/Buick duo's that exist now. Merging Buick and Caddy dealers isn't a very good option and I can't see a Chevrolet/Buick combination doing well either.
A GMC dealer by itself is doomed simply from the lack of options, the GMC/Buick dealers seem to do very well. Carl Black was a huge dealership network back in Ga, the main dealership was GMC/Buick.
GMC is more luxurious in vision and in drive, if you look up reviews and ratings, GMC usually has more heavy duty parts, aka itll last you a bit longer. When we worked on the trucks in shop it showed the Sierra is always better parts wise then the silverado. idk if the SUVs are the same way. Havent you heard the logic of some car reviewers "The only reason General Motors has Chevrolet produce trucks and SUVs is so they can overcharge on GMC."
