I got my driver’s license in the fall of 1965 and I fell in love with the new Mustang. I had one aunt, one uncle and two neighbors who went out and bought one that year. My cousin let me drive her mother's and it was fantastic. My neighbor’s white convertible was the most beautiful car I had ever seen. I used to fantasize that my mom would get one but she got a new Falcon squire wagon instead so I spent my teen years driving a station wagon. I did get my Mustang convertible ...... 42 years later.

I was into what was then called sports cars. In the early 50s, my high school was located right on the highway leading to the road races in Elhkart Lake, so on Friday of racing week, every boy's attention was out the windows, to spot the MGs, Triumphs, Morgans, Jaguars, Porsches, Austin-Healys driving by -- the only foreign cars most us had ever seen. Those, of course, were my dream cars. In those days, if you owned a Porsche, you probably raced it at Elkhart Lake and Watkins Glen and Sebring. Seeing them drive by was definitely one of the most vivid and stirring memories of my teenage years.

Stock car racing in those days was 1938 Chevy and Ford sedans, driven by gas station attendants wearing lap belts in a cloud of dust on a dirt track. Definitely second fiddle to the sports car races.

My top 2 dream cars as a teenager were:

1969 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham (and Limousine)

1968-1969 Dodge Charger R/T ('68 in photo)

Both cars, of course, having more than ample torque.

When I was in high school, I clearly remember when Car and Driver magazine ran an article on the then, new 1978 Porsche 928. I wanted one and told friends and parents I would own one some day.

Of course, I was ridiculed. This was, after all, Porsche's super touring car and was ridiculously expensive for the era.

I got even in 1989 when I found a stunning 1984 928S in Dallas with 9,800 miles on it for $19,000. It was as a new vehicle inside and out. Rare color - Desert Taupe with brown leather interior. I bought it. The original window sticker was just over $50,000 in 1984.

I owned that car for 5 years, eventually selling it for my purchase price. Now I want a 94 or 95 928 GTS...

my first car when i got my license ('77) was a 66 Chevelle, back then was just a nice used car. I loved it, but a couple yrs later picked up a 70 1/2 Camaro. Had "dreams" of finishing it up like a Motion Camaro, but after a blown motor, lack of funds, and having the thought that these cars would always be easy to get, that Camaro ended up as an ice racer on the local lakes in WI....

And as many on this forum probably had the same feelings..... it's not as easy to find/get those cars later in life.

I remember seeing my first Renault 5 Turbo in Califorina & love it's looks. The GTI is one reason why I love my 00 Mazda Protege so much fun to drive even in stock form, yet is gets great gas mileage.

Same with the Vw GTI
