I had one that still drove great at 210k when I went off the road in a snow storm. I'd probably still be driving it today if I had had enough sense to stay home during that snow storm.
Pity they don't make them any more. An American-made automobile that could easily get 40 miles per gallon
What do you think? I'm glad that my Toyota Camry (200k) is on the list, although towards the bottom. When that one gives up the ghost, I might go for a Honda Accord or a Lexus (if my income increases enough by then!). I'll pick a lightly used car with 10-20k and hope I can drive it at least 280,000 more!

Mercedes xxxD, xxxSD, xxxTD. I've seen these things still running strong with over 300,000 miles.
GM, Dodge, Ford pickups with the diesel engine. I saw an F250 for sale not long ago that had 520,000 miles. I've seen many junkyard pieces with over 300,000 miles... some with over 400,000 miles.
You can hit a decent gas-powered car that'll go a long time... Hondas seem to be good at that (had a buddy in college, in 1999, whose 1986 Accord had 325,000 miles)... but if I were looking for something that'd last forever, it'd better growl, have black exhaust, and not know the meaning of the word "octane".
Any more, it's all about maintenance more than manufacturer. I'm pretty meticulous about maintenance. I've had an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme go well over 300,000. A VW Golf that ran up to over 350,000. Both were running when I sold them. My daughter's Ford Focus is almost at 250,000, and my old Volvo is bumping up toward 300,000.

Oh yes, how could I have forgotten. My hubby had three of them, all "died" in an accident (one also in a very sudden, heavy snow storm, that's the only accident that was determined to be his fault by the police, it's not like he's a reckless driver, just got caught in conditions he didn't know how to drive in). He easily got 40 mpg in them and all had well over 200,000 miles when he "killed" them. They were extremely reliable, never had any repair issues at all. All the SL1s he had were manual tranny, We heard the autos had reliability issues though and didn't get the 40 mpg.

I just sold one for a neighbor that had over 400k, and buyer will probably make to 700k+ (non-turbo). I tried out a VW TDI Passat that had 550k, still getting 52 mpg. Of course 'TRUCKS' are a different animal. Even pickups!! There are many 1st gen cummins Dodges over 1m, and that is nothing for a real truck.

As a farm kid... I don't drink coffee, but I MUST have a good snort of unburnt diesel smoke in my face every morning to 'get-going' Make that about 4:30 AM for dairy farmers...
BUT, even tho a diesel head, I have been VERY impressed with Saturns... R.I.P.
If my car didn't get better than 40 mpg, it would fall under the tracks of my bulldozer (as many have done...)
CRUNCH Feels pretty good if you get sick of working on them
The amazing one in the 'fleet' is a GTI VW 1986 (best yr btw) had over 300k with a broken ODOMETER when bought for $400 10yrs ago. HIGH revving engine due to low ratio tranny. AMAZING, still gets over 35 mpg on the highway. BAD piston slap, since one of the PO's didn't use synthetic oil... (cheap skate...) EVEN cheap-o me uses Synthetic oil in my $35 car (more $$ in oil change than in car price) Fortunately it gets 50 mpg on FREE fryeer oil.
My son's $500 Saturn Ion is pushing 223,000 and still doing just fine. So far 2 months, 6 or 8 K miles. Cost: $500 purchase price plus gas. It needs an oil change though and could use new tires. He averages 36 MPG (slightly more freeway than city driving). It is not going to impress any girls, but I am impressed. Since they still use the 2.0 ecotech engine, I assume it must be a decent engine.
He will need a new clutch in the next year or two, unless he does it himself, that will likely be the end of the car.
Had my car for 2 years now and has under 10k... it's gonna take me 60yrs to get to 300k....
I am going to be long gone before this happens
What boggles my mind is people who drive there cars a 1 million miles. One guy did it in 11 years in a Honda Accord. Assuming 40 MPH on average, you would have to drive 6 hours a day, every day for 11 years. That's a lot of driver seat time and $135,000 in fuel.
