I have a 2012 RAV4 (and love mine- I train dogs in agility and travel with 3 crated Border Collies in it and recently made a 2600 mile road trip in it with all three dogs!) and have had Toyota vehicles for 13 years straight now. I would definitely go with the Highlander- I would have considered those if I wanted a next size up. If you like your RAV besides size, then the Highlander really is ideal!!

I know that Nissan is coming out with a re-designed 2015 Murano's. I've always been a Toyota/Honda person so I'm leaning toward a Highlander.
I have a Highlander, purchased 2008.

Anyway, absolutely love the car with the optional 3rd row seating and solid power and gas mileage too.
I'm actually starting to think about a new one down the road.

I'm not a "toyota fanboy" either...I have bought a Kia, Ford, Chevy, Ford, Toyota, Ford as my last 6+ vehicles.

RAV4 is a typical small SUV. It has a bumpy, jumpy ride. What is a man to do if he doesn't need the size of a Highlander, needs an SUV but wants a smooth ride?

I would also look at Pilot (or MDX).

Not sure I understand why you do this. Do you only take it on road trips and let it sit for weeks or months?

I rented a 2014 RAV4 this past summer while on vacation.

As a family, we were not at all impressed.

As the driver, I found the vehicle's handling did not inspire any confidence and the gas mileage was shameful (24 mpg in 75-80% of highway driving).

As passengers, my kids hated the backseat because it was so small that they were squished against each other, and the cargo area was about 1/3 smaller as well.

Our 2013 Subaru Outback is easily much roomier in the backseat and the cargo area.

Also, I can average 28-30 mpg in 75-80% of highway driving.

Based on my own research, if I needed a bigger vehicle, I would seriously consider a hybrid version of either the Pathfinder or the Highlander. I would look at the Pathfinder first because the prices I saw were better and it doesn't have the serious safety issues that have occasionally manifested across the Toyota lineup.

My RAV4 is fine for around town, but after a year of driving it I'm finding myself wanting something with a more comfortable ride and less road noise. I think the RAV4 is pretty typical for a small SUV. My thought is that if I go with a Highlander (or Murano possibly) it will have a more car-like ride with less road noise and the gass mileage is not much worse than the RAV4.

I have considered a 2015 Subaru Outback. I'm not sure if it's much bigger, but I think it may be a more comfortable ride with enough room for me, my husband and our 2 dogs. It's worth a test drive since I'm not in a hurry.

Can you give specifics? I was hoping for some comparisons of features, ride comfort, etc.

Go for the Highlander.

Nissan puts CVT transmissions (junk) in everything now.
