I have a one week trip from about Washington DC to Charleston SC coming up and am thinking about renting a car and leaving my car at home.
Of course I rent a car at my destination, if I'm flying somewhere.
But I mean renting a car for a vacation where you'll be driving there.
IF you DO rent a car why: To keep miles and wear and tear off YOUR car? As a precaution just in CASE there's an accident it's not YOUR car that's damaged?
Technically renting a car just adds to the cost of the vacation. Because it IS an unnecessary expense. Would it be worth it to you to rent a car anyway?
((I don't know why this site won't let you go back and correct typos in thread titles. At least for a couple of minutes. It's just ridiculous. Obviously it should say 'wear" instead of "ear" off your car))
DC to Charleston is really not that long a trip to worry about miles on your car. If you were doing something like DC to San Diego, then up to Seattle, over to Chicago, then back to DC, a rental would make sense. Just drive your own car and save the rental fees.
Check with the rental place for their policy on out-of-state driving or mileage restrictions. I "think" some places add fees if you're going long distances.
I guess I would only rent a car for a vacation if mine was impractical (fuel economy) or unreliable. Otherwise I buy a car to drive it so...
Or too small. We considered renting a van for vacation when my daughter was a toddler so there would be room for us in the vehicle along with all the extra stuff we would need to drag along on a week-long trip. We ultimately decided to go ahead and buy one; we were planning to do so within the next few months anyway, and the cost to rent justified moving the purchase date up a little.
But I couldn't see doing it just to same miles and wear on my vehicle, though.
Yes, I do this, but not all the time. When I am on vacation, sometimes the added expense of a rental is worth the peace of mind of having mitigated potential vehicle related issues. I don't like to be disturbed or hindered during my relaxation. Rental breaks down, I get picked up and issued a replacement. Rental gets into an accident, I get picked up and issued a replacement. Rental is vandalized or stolen... you get the picture. I get plenty of use out of my personal vehicles back at home, I don't miss them on vacation. However if I need or want my personal vehicles on a trip for certain features or capabilities, then I simply take them instead.
I rent them for vacation nearly every year, I put about 1800 miles on a 2015 Sonata rental last October. I'm trying to make the warranty on my car last as long as possible, why run up three months worth of miles in one week.
My wife and her sister and the kids have gone to the beach a couple of times. It's only a 3 hour or so drive, so it isn't about the miles so much as about what two families of kids getting there and back and then driving all around a beach town. The sand, the snacks, the salt water, etc.... For $150 or so for 4 days I don't have to worry about how long I'll spend cleaning ours afterwards....
My inlaws rent occasionally but because sometimes they get silly offers through usaa or aaa at 10.00 a day I'd probably do it too
