GM was infamous for badge engineering. They even put Cadillac badge on a Cavalier. So when GM made a new car platform, Oldsmobile, Buick, & Pontiac got a version of the platform. Why didn't Chevy?

The Corsica, Beretta and Malibu were all based on the N body platform. Never mind, you said 80s...

Only some GM exec at the time would really know why. The 80's N Car had Pontiac, Buick, and Olds versions floating around.

Just pure speculation here, but it could have had to do with plant capacity and expected volume of the brands it was being offered under.

The had the FWD Celebrity and Corsica along with RWD Malibu all would of competed with the N body and most lily the Malibu was their hedge bet to compensate for having such early issue making decent FWD cars they gave Chevy buyers a Decent mid-Size RWD V-6 and 305 V-8 in 2-Door Coupe and 4-Door Sedan and 5-door Wagon that was smaller then the Stadard G-Body but used alot of the Standard and then proven G-body Drivetrain(s) as well as a shortened and lighter G-body
