Your points are valid. I was suggesting alternatives.
LOL remember those suzuki samarai? Man unpopular at first but they turned into an off road rage. I know a guy who managed to put a chevy small block in one.
anyway. Good posts one and all.
I have a buddy who has a Suzuki Samurai. He's like 6'5". He had to physically unbolt the seat, and move it back like a foot, so he could fit. hehehe.

I was going to suggest the Samurai as a good, inexpensive 4x4. They can often be found easily for under $2000. With a few modifications, they can be made to go almost anywhere. They are fairly reliable, and extremely simple in design, which is why they are so popular for off highway vehicle build ups. The Jeep Wrangler (or the older CJ series) is also popular for the same reasons. These vehicles don't lend themselves well to extensive highway driving, though, because they don't offer a good highway ride, but once they get off the pavement, they really shine.
I've ridden in a few jeeps on the highway. Its not bad if you're in a climate that lends itself to being open air. And the heaters on those things are marvelous.

You are so right! Mine was so good I took it out and donated it to the local junkyard so they could study how they got that much sound and that little heat out of it. LOL
I know there's that element of it, but it still works for some people. Every vehicle has some shortcoming, it depends on the individual what they can live with. I don't think the OP should rule it out until trying it personally.

Hence why I recommended they sit in it.
I sat in one, and because of that pillar, decided not to drive it.
