I sat in one, and because of that pillar, decided not to drive it.
I really like my FJ. Its a true 4 x 4 , not a wormed over Chev Tahoe, like the Hummer. Yes it has the blind spot, but so far I have not hit antthing but some trees and brush in the woods. Its just too wide for serious off road up here in the U.P..... Will go great about anywhere there is a road of sorts, once I put on winter tires. Its my wifes car, but I find myself driving it often as the Mega Cab Dodge is not for around town ease.
I was going to suggest the Samurai as a good, inexpensive 4x4. They can often be found easily for under $2000. With a few modifications, they can be made to go almost anywhere. They are fairly reliable, and extremely simple in design, which is why they are so popular for off highway vehicle build ups. The Jeep Wrangler (or the older CJ series) is also popular for the same reasons. These vehicles don't lend themselves well to extensive highway driving, though, because they don't offer a good highway ride, but once they get off the pavement, they really shine.
Under 2,000 ? Find me one, I will write a check today ! I really want one for my personal woods trails, but everything I have found so far is 4,000 or more, for not a pc of junk.
ford ranger with the FX4 level 2 off road pkg is a great truck and throw on a set of 33" and a 3" lift and you got a decent off road truck that you can daily drive
another choice either new or used would be a jeep YJ, TJor WJ
just get the 4.0 and the 5-speed manual and it should go pretty much anywhere

best bet is a dirt bike or ATV if you plan on going on those super skinny trails but most times a bronco or K5 is great what about a old jeep YJ from the early 90's?
another thing as long as you don't need to street drive it a side by side would be great as long as you have something that can tow it to the trails

as a guy who owns a lifted 91 F250 for off roading I would rather have one of those side by sides just because it is less of a hassle if you break it and cheaper when it comes to repairs. they already come with a full roll cage and 4 point harness.

Ok, good try, but, I want a back seat for the dog.( Yj-CJ would work, but a little too big maybe) I want good heater, narrow as I can get and still have 2 seats....And not pay 10,000 for somthing you can't drive on the street. I loved my Mule, but sold it when we moved up north, no cab and not so good in the snow ( low ground clearence). There is not much out there I know. Everyone around here has the side by sides these days, but most are summer runners only.

same here people are always hauling them up to the trails and they leave their full size trucks and suvs at the bottom of the trail and go have fun with the side by side.
If you are looking for something that can be driven on the street too and that has a back seat either a suzuki sidekick/ chevy tracker or jeep YJ are pretty much your only choices the jeep being the better off road truck and has better aftermarket support.
