Sometimes cars reach a point that their intrinsic worth is more than the paper money you'll get. We have a 98 Explorer that I just can't let go for the paltry sum I will likely get for it. It costs me insurance and takes up room in the driveway. Once in a while the kids come home and get to drive it but I really should sell it.

Yeah.

I've kept cars for years for sentimental reasons, while also recognizing that I'd never recoup anywhere near the amount of time, labor, and money I had into it. But eventually, I've let them go.

For me it usually happens with sports cars. I'll have one, spend a bunch of money on modifying it to my taste, and then a few years down the road, I'll buy a newer sports car that the old one just can't hold a candle to.

I wish that I kept a few cars years ago that still ran good - and sold for cheap money.

We have 3, and only two drivers. My 4x4 Truck has only gone 3,500 miles in 2016. We could rent when a truck is needed to haul, but I also drive it in foul weather and leave the Challenger at home. We also have the advantage of a spare if one of the others is in the shop. It's paid off, and the insurance, with collision & comprehensive still on it only runs $600/year. That's only $50/month, well worth it.

We have "his & hers" spares.
We each have a daily driver/beater.
We each have a utility (her's is a van, mine is a truck).
We each have a luxury (her's is an Audi, mine is a BMW).

I'm going to say all of mine are spares since I work from home. My daughter is currently using my beater car to get her around.

We have 2 suburbans
1 pick up truck
1 scooter
I drive 1 suburban
Mr. CSD drives the other suburban
my Brother is driving the truck right now
the scooter sits in the shed
We are getting one more truck
We are keeping everything for now, all were paid for with cash, insurance is no big deal.

I only own 1 car I am retired and don't feel the need to pay insurance on something I don't have to.

My parents have a 3rd vehicle, a 2001 Toyota SUV that they only put a few thousand miles on per year. They live in snow country and it's their only 4x4. Even though it only has 60k miles on it now, the age means they can't get anything meaningful in terms of trade value.

It comes in handy when another vehicle is in the shop, plus I drove it last time I visited saving the cost of a rental while I was in town.

My wife and I shared a vehicle for several years because I had a company vehicle for work and she was not able to work due to injury from a work accident. But now she's in school and will return to work so I recently purchased another vehicle. Once she's back to work I think we'll get a Prius or something for her daily commute to keep the miles off our SUV.

It's a vicious cycle. You fix it then hope nothing else goes wrong. After all, you've fixed everything, right? But there is always more. My mistake was to put in a new transmission. Once I was invested that much, the muffler and shocks and that lower intake manifold leak had to be fixed too!
