I know someone who paid close to 50 grand (with TTL) for a Pilot Elite. MSRP 48 grand....out the door is easily cracks 50k

The expense of a car is subjective to how much you can afford to pay.

Exactly. For me, my car when new was expensive at $90k, which is why I bought it used. But for others, that $90k might be a bargain and they have no problem spending much more than that. A friend is looking at purchasing a used $150k car (Ferrari 599), as they feel the $300k it was new was expensive. It's all relative.

Had I the means, there are a few $300k+ cars I wouldn't mind buying. And at least a couple million$+ cars (Ferrari F40 and Bugatti Chiron come to mind)...

To me, its a car that is probably unattainable in my lifetime and I probably can't afford the maintenance on top of the cost of the car.......Enzo or a Veyron

In my opinion, ALL new cars are expensive. Can I afford a decent amount on a new car? Yes, but it is still an expensive purchase. Don't look at it as a vehicle, look at it as an item. If you make 100K a year and you buy a 20K car, 20% of your annual income just went to a single item. Chances are, there is only 1 other item you will ever purchase in your lifetime which will be more expensive and that is a house (maybe a boat or a plane, but you get the idea).

$45k can get you a fine vehicle in most classes, anything more is getting expensive.
That means I'm driving a Volkswagon instead of an Audi.

They are expensive no matter what you can afford. That said, I think realistically the true "expensive" cars begin at 60K and up. That doesn't mean everyone can afford a loaded $50K BMW 3 series, but there are a lot of folks who can too. The air just seems to thin out as you breach and move beyond $60K. For now.

In a way it depends on what you shop too. I have never been more disappointed than I was a year ago when I was shopping luxury brand 2 door "sporty" coupes around the $50K mark. They all seemed to have some major flaw (to me) which I found shocking for the price. Sluggish performance, extremely noisy sound intrusion from air/tires, grandpa's suspension. My impression was that a lot of folks were buying a cheap car with an expensive badge. That's another story though.

Maybe for a car, expensive means it costs as much as a house. Since there are a lot of home round here you can buy for $35,000 - $40,000, maybe that should be considered expensive for a car. But by that standard, no car would be expensive in Southern California until it cost $650,000

Donno. truly, expensive to me is one I can not pay cash. I don't do loans or lease. So it's used and paid in full. Or, no buy.

I think, as rapidly as car value falls down after someone bought it, it has to be straight stupid to buy new. Even one or two years of ownership by someone saves you thousands and you still have car under warranty.

On another note, "Affordable" now is marketed as shy of $40 000. Considering that promised Tesla S already has over 300 000 pre orders, marketed at that price mark, it is probably true.
