the participants are getting fewer and fewer but many state visitors, chamber of commerce and tourism offices still provide free state road maps for the asking.

I do still use road maps on occasion and Mrs G and I think it a hoot for one of us to be driving with a map held up in front of us while looking confused at other cars passing us, while the other person steers surreptitiously...oh how we laugh!

I prefer those state map books you can buy. Pretty handy, if you like real maps. And I do. For a city, there's city map books...just for the one I live near. Sometimes I can get them cheap at a used bookstore or online site. Yeah, AAA checks your AAA ID...which I have.

Used to have a Thomas guide in every car. Now we just ask Siri. She tells us where to go and will reroute us if we forget to make a turn. Also Siri will tell us the driving conditions, gives us options, tells us how long based on current driving conditions.

I love paper maps, and i do have a GPS.

When i want one for a certain state, i go online to their tourist website(s) and usually one will be offered in a package they will mail you - for free. (Did not read all the comments to see if this was already mentioned.)

I have bought an Atlas for a state that i travel to all the time.

HaHaHa - I was going to post the same thing "what's a map"? Seriously does anybody even use a map these days? Between Google, Mapquest and Siri does anybody really need a paper one?

The screen size of my paper maps is about 24"x36". Compare that to your smartphone. Nice when you travel.

And sometimes, I don't want to take the route ordained by google. I like scenic. I sometimes don't want to drive thru cities on freeways. But yea google maps has done right by me.

Nice for local or regional driving. But if I'm taking a vacation, I like to see the big picture. Highways and local roads don't change much, route-wise.
