Compared to some dealerships. I recently called in to get some front brake quotes and they were way higher than what the dealership charges. It wasn't just for brakes. A/C work and their batteries were more expensive etc. Their hourly labor rate is cheaper than the dealers though.
Here are some examples:
Goodyear wanted around $400 (brakes & rotors) to replace front brakes. Dealer wanted $225., Firestone was around $400.
Goodyear charged $168 for a new battery, If I went to the dealer it would have been $125. Firestone N/A.
You are correct. Not always. Sometimes. Also, going to dealer at lower cost up front may end with a wound up list of recommended this and that greatly exceeding the original quote. Or may not. But every time my inlaw takes his Corolla in for free oil change, he ends with $500 or so list.
This is why savvy customer uses thing called phone. been around for a while. It allows to call dealerships or shops and find about prices. And ask questions.
It's not that G & F are more expensive, the stealer is low-balling the quote, planning on an upsell after work starts.
I just had same front pads & rotors done at local mechanic shop. $400 for premium parts (and they serviced the caliper, which stealer did not the last time I did let them do the job :-(
The dealer uses some kind of lathe machine to resurface the rotors.
Not anymore.
All rotors (except exotic cars) are made in China. The US does not make automotive rotors anymore.
It is cheaper to use new China made rotors then to resurface old ones. Yes, there may be an exception here and there. Next time anyone gets a brake job ASK if the rotors are resurfaced or new China ones put on. Of course if the rotors are good they are not replaced nor resurfaced.
Service varies from franchise to franchise. Some franchise offer great honest service at a reasonable price. Some are just as dishonest as fly-by-night shops.
Paying fees to the township to operate in a split zoned area....Paying taxes on the building.
Paying the employees. Yup Most business have to recoup thru higher labor price or service. It has little to do with the quality of workmanship ...and much to do with the overhead fees....
Franchises also charge a fee to use their name.....
