I purchased 3 GM cars new in the 1970s. A 1972 Chevy Nova with 350V8, a nice, reliable car. A 1975 Camaro with a 350V8, not as good as the Nova, had some problems, and the paint faded within months. Then the worst - a 1978 Olds Delta 88, with an Olds 350V8, so many problems. GM quality and reliability went straight down hill in the 1970s, and this has to be blamed on stupid and incompetent management, it had nothing to do with the factory workers.

Correct it was people like Rodger Smith a account not a car guy always cutting cost to save money, has s only claim is Saturn and we know what happen to Saturn. Then you had Rick Wagoner another been counter that led to GM's BK. But everyone blames the union workers they put together the cars with the materials that are given to them that we're ok by upper management. But no it's always the little guy on the lines fault right. No the new GM CEO is a car girl she worked on the line she went to engineering school for automobiles her father also worked for the big 3 she understands how to make a great car. She inherited the ignition problem she didn't create it. Her name is Mary Barra first woman to lead the largest big 3 automaker.

GM had problems with transmissions in those cars - did yours fail? But other than that, the '78 Delta 88 had a pretty solid reputation. I had one, too, bought it used in '90, drove it across the country 3 times and loved it....until the transmission wouldn't shift past second. But I think by then it had 140,000 or so miles on it.

Just curious - what problems did you have?

Paper thin paint, I had the car repainted. Poor sheet metal fit, compared to my earlier Chevys. Constant electrical /ignition problem, never could get it right in 100,000 miles. Transmission went out at 50,000 miles. I had it repaired at a transmission shop. Olds later lost a class action law suit, and had to pay for transmission repairs, but they only paid if you had the repair done at an Olds dealer, so i did not get reimbursed.
