Some how i cant foresee you being happy in your SVT Lightning and being totally controlled by a computers idea of how you should drive, kinda eliminates the need for a muscle vehicle as all cars will go the same speed.

It would be great, though, to have autonomous cars. That would a sure signal, for me at least, that we are still evolving. But i think it would take us at least 10-15 years to see a "successful autonomous car" - with all the tests/checks passed.
I trust machines, i don't trust people. Airplanes are almost fully autonomous today except for landing and take offs. Flight MH270 dissappeared in the Indian Ocean not because it didn't follow the program, somebody on the flight disabled autopilot.

We are still 2 decades away because of technology, societal issues, and infrastructure still way behind.

Add to that the overwhelming majority of us who have already gone on record as saying we would rather die than own an autonomous car. You can't ban the majority of the cars on the road, and the majority of the cars on the road in 2025 will be non autonomous cars. If you try that, we will just ignore the law and continue driving what we are driving. People are continuing to buy non autonomous cars, which have a lifespan of about 12 years. Over half of those cars will still be on the road in 2025. So there is zero chance for that prediction to come true. Unless you fanboys are planning to raise trillions of dollars to buy every non autonomous car driver an autonomous car. Even then I think most of us would just decline the offer.

2025 is sooooo not happening. Numerous countries are planning to remove fossil fuel run vehicles in 2040. And that's fuel. Now that I say that, Holland wants to be the first to fully ban fossil fuel vehicles. So when Holland goes with autonomous, I'd add 7-10 years to the rest of the first world.

I don't trust either. For me to get on board with autonomous vehicles, it would have to be an all or nothing proposition. I don't think you're any safer having a mixture of manual driving and self-driving vehicles, simply because you still have the human element involved. Unless those self driving cars happen to have a separate highway away from the other cars, I think you're actually put at more risk.

I do think autonomous vehicles would be the answer for huge, urban cities where traffic is ridiculous. So as long as they are all set at the same speeds.

Agreed.

As one who gets carsick, the thought of a self-driving car is nauseating. And I lovedriving.

Pretty sure I'll be living out my final years on a horse if all this comes true.

Think again, sheltered snowflakes; it's not a matter of what a clique of bureaucrats in an ivory tower want to impose. It's what the limits of technology and the markets (hopefully, guided by the values of a freedom-loving people -- all planners seem to hate individual freedom) will allow. And just like their predecessors throughout the industrial age, the over-planers either obfuscate or go silent when hard facts get in their way.

Waymo is rolling out fully autonomous vehicles in Phoenix this year. IE No driver, the car just picks you up and takes you to your destination.

Its limited to phoenix metro, as it was believed that area provided the best weather for the test.

So we arent 5 years away. We are a month or two away form the first roll out.

They are building an autonomous car test center at willow run, so I expect they believe they will have something to test when it is done.

Whenever my smart phone or computer crap out, I am reminded why autonomous vehicles are a great idea. Not to mention cyber terrorism...

Not to worry, I am resourceful and will either disable any autonomous features, or build my own high powered electric scooter if it happens before I croak.
