1984 AMC Eagle! Any body style, with the 4.2L I6, and 5 speed manual tranny. Yes, even the Gremlin based Kambak, although the SX/4 Sport would be at the top of the list.

Wish I could buy one now new.

AMC Gremlin.

Red. Red vinyl bench seat. Red interior. Black vinyl/rubber carpet. Manual 3 speed transmission. Could have been 4 speed. Base model. Viewed in showroom back then. Sometime near this time period.

My first new car was an '84 Chevy Camaro Z28 exactly like the one in the video - red with the optional High Output 5.0 V8. By today's standards, the notion of a 190hp being "high output" is pretty funny. These days, I have zero interest in a 1984 Z28, even in mint condition. I'm not at all nostalgic and today's cars are vastly superior.

We bought an '84 Cavalier. It ended up dying at 400K. Original engine and transmission. Just maintenance and wear items. It did go through exhaust systems and towards the end had some electrical gremlins.

I'll be hooted at but it seriously was one of the best cars we've had.

I know what you mean. My dad bought an '81 Citation. Ugly little 2 tone brown 5 door car. He gave it to me at 285k miles and I gave it to a friend at 323k miles. Only needed an alternator in that time. Probably the most reliable little car I've ever seen and so useful. This one is identical to it, color and everything:

My Mom had a Pontiac Phoenix which was basically the same car, and it had the 2.5 ‘Iron Duke’. I think it made it close to 200k before it started burning oil due to worn rings, and I think the reverse went out around that time too.

I own an 87 Trans Am that has the tuned port injected 350, and it still only makes 225hp. So yeah, even my Tacoma pickup is likely quicker. I always wanted one when I was a kid though, and now I have one.

I had a few Fieros over a nearly 20 year span, an 85 V6 and two different 88 Formulas, one with T-tops. The 88s particularly had great steering feel (no power steering, so tons of road feel) and the 88 suspension and brake upgrades really let the car ride and handle well dynamically. Also, I really self taught myself to work on cars and do all kinds of repairs, fixes, and upgrades on them! Lots of good memories of them!

My boss bought a 86 new. It was also a POS. They went thru three engines the first year, I kid you not. The first engine ate the cam one week after they bought it. Lots of electrical issues. I remember it needed brake pads at 10,000 miles. I went and picked it up and brought the old pads back. They were, in a car that weighed 1000 lbs more than my Pinto, half the size physically of the Pinto pads! My boss got rid of it at a loss 2 years after they bought it.
