Slightly, but I expect it to be much less than predicted. I see many, many cases where people using Uber/Zip Cars and even bus are eventually buying cars. They are just waiting much longer. Just as they leave the cities for the suburbs when they have kids (later age now) they eventually need a car. As for 16 year olds not getting their license, yes, the cell phone and texting, plus the cost of insurance for the parents has affected that. Still, go to any of the 3 high schools in our suburban area and the student lots are packed with cars. Right now we are in a dip for car sales because the huge population of millennials is now 23-38. The bulk of those will not be buying cars until they hit age 38-40.
Seems cost is the barrier, not the lack of want/desire, meaning there is a demand, so the supply will adjust accordingly.
That first paragraph though, I have no idea why this keeps coming up, you are not losing money in the time you are commuting unless you are actually forgoing pay. Most people are not paid for that time regardless of what they are doing.
Instead of interviewing some CEO they need to interview normal people. I guarantee you’ll have a different opinion of transportation and costs
As for his $20 a hour how does that add up to 20,000 a year. Working a average work week for a year is 260 days divided into the $20k a year he is willing to spend is about $76.92 a hour spent for that one hour saved out of his day. That’s $385 a week that’s $1538 a month give or take. To this guy it may be a drop in the bucket but for most people that’s a huge amount.
This whole article is bull****. People aren’t buying new cars because they are clamoring to get into ride share services. They aren’t buying because they cost a freaking arm and a leg to buy.
If everyone is getting rid of their cars why are the freeways so clogged with traffic?
Good lord this nonsense again? Talk about out of touch. The only people who don't own cars are homeless people and otherwise simple folk.
I can see a place like NY city not owning a car. Maybe a few other spots where parking and traffic is so bad it would be faster walking or public transportation.
Eh, I probably know of the area in which the subject of the article lives and it's VERY difficult to find on-street parking, especially after a snow-storm. I could never live there due to the stress, and many people who do live there do forgo the car.
But it's not indicative of the entire area's population. Hell, I live in somewhat metro Boston and could never imagine life without a car, but I have available parking for mine. I own two personally, and might pick up a 3rd.
