My 6-cylinder 2015 Outback will be 5 years old in a few weeks and has 75k miles on it. I have a 7/100k extended warranty. I'll certainly keep it until it's off-warranty and then drive it until I don't trust it. 10 years is a bit much for a car that lives outdoors with Vermont road salt.
My girlfriend has a garage queen 2011 Volvo S80. With the amount of miles it sees and the lack of road salt exposure, it will likely go 15 years.
I'm a car guy who likes all kinds of cars. I can't own them all at once, so I own them sequentially, and never for very long. I don't usually keep them long enough to get bored of them, it's just that there are other cars I also want and find ways of getting. I've had over a hundred custom cars in the last 40 years, some of them sticking around as long as 5 years, but most have been a year or less (and I've had upwards of 10 cars at a time, back in the day). I've made money on most of them, so they pay for the next purchase, so in reality I've not spent much of my own money on all those cars (the hobby tends to pay for itself).
I've got a million ideas for custom cars, and still want to build so many, but I have to slow down these days, simply due to age. Funny thing is my Volt was originally got back in 2013, so it's about the longest I've had any single car. Especially one that's still stock. Might have to change that... lol.
Driving a car for ten years is not odd. I would not want to own just that one car for ten years, I would have a second or a third just because I like cars. I would use the oldest car as a beater; that's what I did with my 2004 Pontiac Grand AM. I had that car for 14 years and sold it to a relative two weeks ago, but I've owned 2 other cars simultaneously while I owned the Grand AM.
I always hear it from people who just bought a car. I also promised this to myself when I bought a car 5 years ago but I can't imagine myself driving the same car in 2025.
I'm tempting to buy a Tesla Model X next year and keep it for 10 years
Did you promise that to yourself when you bought your car? Did you keep your promise, why and why not?
I drove a Jeep Cherokee for 17 years. It crushed my soul to get rid of it but I couldn't justify putting 2k in for new A/C and heat.
I bought my current ride in 2011. With 35k miles on it, I'm guessing I'll be in it for at least another 5-10 years.
I just buy the car... how long I keep it will depend on my changing needs, how the car ages/runs, as well as what is out there in the market.
I bought a Shelby GT350 and got rid of it after 3 years and less than 4K miles (traded it in for a Model 3). I also have a 2011 Outback that has almost 100K that I have no intention of getting rid of ... pending the new Rav4 Hybrid Prime.
And the Outback was to replace a 2000 Acura TL that we had to get rid of because of transmission issues. Acura would not honor their 10/100K warranty because we were 3 months out of the 10-year timeframe. This really gave us a sour taste because the issue was well known. Acura had to extend that warranty because of it. We barely had 90K on it. So guess what - 10 years later and I have not owned another Honda/Acura.
So no - I don't really set ownership plans or goals. It all depends on various factors.
‘02 “bug-eyes” WRX wagon bought new in ‘01 and a ‘06 Subaru Tribeca bought new in ‘05. Looking to upgrade the Tribeca with a new turbo Outback next fall but never going to give up the WRX.
Paid cash for both. Not having a car payment is blissful and you become a millionaire a lot quicker (for average Joes like us) when you don’t blow a lot of hard earned money on cars but that’s a different topic.
