The paddles on the wheel are even worse because they turn with the wheel. They should be mounted on the steeing column so I always know where the paddle is. Everytime I make a 90 degree turn, my hands are out of place for using a paddle, so I either have to rev the snot out of the engine, slow down and wait until the paddle comes back to hand, or reach down for the shifter.

It is idiotic.
My ride is like that. Backwards.

I like using manual shifting on the trails, going down long grades where I want to hold a speed. And sometimes it is fun to run through the gears.

When I traded my old pickup in on the one I have now, the old one had a manual transmission. The salesperson could not drive a manual. I miss manuals. However, automatics are becoming super reliable and make the whole system that is a modern automobile integrated in all systems I have other worries.

Push buttons are nothing new. Rotate a knob to shift gears is fine with me, too. I honestly think some people look for things to complain about.

The subject was about the disappearing automatic transmission shifter and going to a dial selector, or the F150 hiding shifter when you want a folding little platform.
Nowhere in the OP was it even called a "shifter", but simply the "it", presumably the shifter mentioned un the 3-word title. What language in the OP excluded a certain type of "shifter"?

Clearly you don't remember the push button transmissions of the late 1950's

Long before MADD was a thing and before open container laws & 0.08 BAC laws were enacted, I'd drive for miles using my thigh. How else would you hold your beer and shift the car? Or look at a paper map driving somewhere unfamiliar? Or operate the CB radio?

Correct we didn’t have cell phones back in my time and GeoffD time. Our navigation system was a paper map that was hell try to refold. Then like he said had to have a hand free to drink our black label beer. I could steer and shift with one hand, we were raised in a different time that’s all. We didn’t have all these rules on how your suppose to drive. Boy those were the good ole days. And i forgot i had to have a hand free to smoke and flick my cigarette out the vent widow.
