If you use snow tires what kind do you get? I am looking for snow tires for a mid-size SUV. Any suggestions? I am not looking for budget tires, just ones that perform well on snow and ice.
There was a review of Snow Tires in Consumer Reports Last Year that was very good. However, I just gave the issue away since a friend is buying a new SUV.
If you are in a state that you cannot run studs, then the Blizzak W965 is the cats azz. You can get them in sizes for a SUV and with a "E" load rating as well. Very good tire! Kind of impressed with them actually to tell the truth. After spending many winters in Maine where you can run studded tires I wasn't expecting much out of a set of tires without studs. I was WRONG! These handle better than my last set of studded Firestone Winterforce did in ALL types of winter driving. Plus they are not as noisy as studs are on bare pavement.
If you can run studded tires, then it is hard to beat a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT or Hakkapeliitta SUV depending on the load rating you need. These are better than the Blizzaks by a good margin with studs, but not as effective without studs in them.
I run BFG All-Terrain tires on my pickup truck, and like the way they handle snow and ice. I also use them for both highway and off-highway driving (dirt roads and 4x4 trails), so they are versatile in that way, too. My truck is 4wd, so that also makes handling snow and ice easier. I've never had a need to look for a more specific snow tire for it.
Blizzaks are well worth the money, and you can get them for SUVs and pickups. Tirerack.com will tell you if they're available for your particular vehicle and give you a good idea how much they should cost at your local shop.
You do have to be careful with tailgaters and good tires though....you can stop pretty quickly and the idiot behind you usually can't.
