Here's a great calculator at Gas Mileage Savings Calculator: Car Cost vs. Fuel Savings that will show you how much you'll save by trading in your gas guzzler for a more efficient vehicle and how long it would be before you break even.
If I were to trade in a 20mpg car worth $8000 on a Civic Hybrid, I'd save $147 a month in gas based on how much driving I do each month at $4.50 a gallon. Sounds like a lot, but the difference in price would mean that I wouldn't break even for 147 months - or about 12 years.
Of course this just looks at the fuel costs, but it is something to consider when you are panicking about gas prices and thinking about buying something new.
Yeah but trade it in on a Honda Fit and the break even point would be alot quicker.
I did mine which would be 2002 Tacoma with a 2008 Rav4 and it would only be 21 months to break even.

Did you take out any loans that you have, or did you pay cash for the Rav4?
You will not save any money by trading in your current vehicle for the fuel-efficient vehicle you have selected.
I have a PAID FOR 2002 Suburban 4WD. I only drive it on average 500-750 miles a month. The cost of gas HERE where I am is about .37 cents LOWER than what they have on their calculator. I NEED the larger SUV due to work (sorry but I do and I'm NOT going to explain it - there are FEDERAL LAWS restricting what I can and can not do and it is for the safety of EVERYONE). Then, we also travel back and forth to our lakehouse and tow a boat and other things. A smaller car won't work. I have one of those "smaller" cars to use when I don't need the SUV. So I checked for a new Tahoe Hybrid as it was the closest thing in size to what I have. Why on earth would I go buy a $52K vehicle if mine is PAID FOR!?!?!?! That is just plain stupid and bad business sense. So I'll keep driving my VERY CLEAN and PAID FOR SUV. Regular maint. goes a LONG WAY in making ANY size car run cleaner and more efficient.
2008 GMC Yukon Denali traded in for a 2008 Cadillac CTS. It would save me $180 in gas a month but would take 46 months before I broke even...doesn't seem worth it to me.

Hi. Jumped on this for a minute. Yes, I do agree with you. Keep your Suburban thats in good shape. No more than you drive it, gas shouldn't be that bad for you. And the fact that .......ITS PAID FOR. No I don't think you would be doing yourself any favors by trading this vehicle. Oh I guess there are greener vehicles, if you are into that. But truly you would have to go with a bicycle to achieve total green. Seriously, you have a great suv and paid for at that. Keep
It depends, for myself it wouldn't save me anything because my PU is paid off, increasing the milage wouldn't offset the payment because of the few miles I drive it. If a person already has a payment on a poor fuel economy vehicle it could work out if they get a desent trade in.
I think I love my Jeep to much to get rid of her. She fits my lifestyle well, and it would save me $13 in gas a month.
