What would happen if I moved to a new state but didn't register the car I'm driving? Here is the deal my uncle is giving me his car which he is still paying for because he can no longer afford it. As such he doesn't have the title yet so he can't transfer the car over to me. So should I take the car and keep the registration in the current state and move to Georgia with out of state plates even though I would technically be a permenant resident?
I think that, if asked, you need to say it's your uncle's car and you are borrowing it. A letter from him to this effect might not hurt. If 2 out of the 3 match - registration, insurance, and your license - I think you are OK.
If the car is registered in your uncle's name, if he's a SC resident or TN or whatever, I think it's perfectly legit for it to bear the tags of the uncle's state, not yours.
You need to check the Georgia regs though. Don't go by my recollections.
