The word "motor" has been around a lot longer than electric motors have. In broad terms, it refers to any agent of change, be it a mechanical device that causes an object to move (as in the most common contemporary usage) or just some force or agent that motivates some action (money is the motor that drives the world). In contemporary usage, a motor is any mechanical device that converts other forms of energy into mechanical energy. An ICE clearly applies.

I won't disagree with that but after the invention of the electric motor there seemed to be a separation between motor and engine. Where the two terms applied to the two various forms of combustion. Then at some point they were used interchangeably.
