When they said their core brands were Chevy, Caddilac, Buick, and GMC....just kinda implies who's on the chopping block. So I can't say I'm surprised from that standpoint.
I'll miss the Pontiac G8, that is a sweet car. But that's about it, the rest of the Pontiac lineup just stinks... Good riddance!
The G8 can be easily migrated to the Chevy line; it's already marketed as a Chevy elsewhere (Middle East I think?) so they already have the design cues and what-not worked out. The thing is they are probably going to stop importing Commodores to the U.S. after this product cycle because of tightening fuel economy regulations.
Of course, all of this is just speculation at this point. I've never even heard of this source so I'll take what they say with an entire shaker full of salt until I hear it from a more established source. Such as GM itself.

This might sound odd but why doesn't GM dump ALL their brands and just call their cars "GMC" as opposed the Chevy, Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer, Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac? And the dealers could just be "GMC Dealer"? What happens to the existing dealers when a brand is dropped? I noticed that the Saturn dealer over here on Thornton Rd just closed! They did not put up another GM brand to sell.

A number of reasons, people associate brands with certain types of vehicles and cars are not a "one size fits all" sort of business, people want variety. Cadillac buyers aren't going to want a GMC CTS or GMC Escalade, they want the PREMIUM brand i.e. Cadillac. Most car companies have a middle brand that they market to average income individuals and then a premium brand that is focused to a wealthier clientle. Honda has Acura, Toyota has Lexus, Ford has Lincoln, etc etc. A car is a reflection of one's personality and brands reflect that. I do think GMC and Chevy should be eventually integrated into ONE brand since both brands produce the same type of vehicles but under a different nameplate. I couldn't see a GMC Corvette though...
Chevy and GMC do not produce the same types of vehicles. The overlap is in trucks only, because that's all GMC does.
As long as trucks are the major chunk of the sales volume in this country, there will always be a GMC brand so that the Pontiac/Buick/GMC dealers can have trucks on their lots. The day trucks become a niche market may well be the day that either the GMC marque goes away or they stop selling trucks as Chevys.
(Looks around at the parking lots of local senior centers). If you're over fifty you do!
