I liked all three of my Range Rovers. But this is an old thread, and I actually still had my '01 Range Rover 4.6 HSE when the thread was created. I'd have another with no concerns. The parts are cheap and easy to work on.
At 100k miles, I replace the air ride suspension bags due to age cracking. Cost me $100 per corner to do and took about an hour to change out all 4. That's the primary failure point on them and it's easy to fix (or even upgrade to all standard coils all around). Rode so nice and worked well in the snow and offroad, and even towed my 19 ft travel trailer all over the east coast.
For someone who does all their own wrenching, there's nothing wrong with a Range Rover. For everybody else, unless you have access to a good indy mechanic who charges reasonable prices, they're expensive to own. You'd get slaughtered at a dealership.
I always want what I can not have, and that is a D90. They stopped importing them to the U.S. years ago. That being said, I still wouldn't buy one unless I had $$$ to maintain it, but they are a great off road vehicle. I bought a Jeep Wrangler instead.
In my area, the high end Range Rovers are de riguer for the soccer moms, and between the Lexus, BMW, and Benz SUV's seem to be a bit more popular. All are plentiful though.
I see a lot of early 2000's Landrover Discovery SUV's being sold used for only a few thousand bucks, often under $5000. Why is that? Are they complete junk? Comparable year Lexuses are going for at least double.
Because they are fairly unreliable vehicles that "the magic" wears off of quickly, so they devalue at an exponential rate.
And were often picked up in the used market by people that didn't have the financial means to properly maintain them, buying them as status symbols.
