On tv they have been showing accidents by drivers skidding on ice in Pittsburgh and other East coast cities. It looks wild and helpless & a lot of fun but I am sure scary also. What can a driver do when he hits ice on the road? Not hit the brakes, right?
Imagine going where the car wants to go without you being able to control it. I have hit black ice before and the way I handled it was just paying attention to the road ahead at the same time tapping on the brakes (kind of like pulsating taps) not slamming on them and steer away from other cars and the curb.
It sure looks like fun on TV but it is not even close.
Depends on if your ride is front or rear wheel drive.
Front wheel dive, jerk the parking brake and turn the steering wheel as far as you can to either side.
Rear wheel drive, mash the gas and turn the steering wheel as far as you can in either direction.
Carefully follow these instructions and have an exhillarating ride! Oh and don't forget, if you are driving an advertised as all wheel drive mini SUV, you can do whatever the hell you want on ice.

Is that because SUV's don't flip over? I have seen people hydroplane on wet freeways but nothing like the footage I've seen on tv when a car starts to skid on ice. I know it must be frightening but it also looks really cool.

I think Electron was being sarcastic. All of us who live up here in the north have seen flocks of SUV's off in the ditch during the winter, many of them without snow tires and driven by overconfident suburbanites.
And no, it is neither fun nor cool to be driving along and suddenly hit a patch of ice, or to wonder whether you will stop when you get to the bottom of the hill, or before you get to the car stopped in front of you.
It sucks but it's something that us in the Midwest and Northeast have to deal with. I don't care what anybody tells you, no one is an expert when it comes to driving on ice, Its a crapshoot. I'll take 3 feet of snow over ice any day of the week.
Fun? No...can't say I've ever thought of it as fun. The ultimate test of one's driving skills and level of common sense perhaps.
Probably the worst I ever personally dealt with was a mile long stretch of (luckily) flat road in a rwd Ford LTD. An inch at a time....throw the car in neutral while the car steadied itself...back into gear to go forward at an angle at about two miles per hour...back into neutral...and on and on, all the while hoping some other fool wouldn't think he was invincible to the elements. Then into a parking lot around the side of a building for safety so the other nuts coming in wouldn't take me out. Brakes? Forget the brakes, that only made things worse.
The best choice is to get yourself the heck out of harm's way as soon as possible.

WoW bazzwell, I am really impressed by your driving skills. You have to admit that afterwards you had a lot to think about? That's an adventure!
Back in 1984 I hit a patch of black ice which coverrd my whole lane for a short distance. I was driving a Lynx (Ford's Mercury version of the Escort) fwd. I was slowing for a red light (foot on the brakes) when I came upon the ice . The car instantly did a 180 degree turn which ended when I got the other side of the ice. I was stopped at the red light going the wrong way. In the next lane , where there was no ice, a car pulled up alongside of me, it's driver staring at me in shock. There weren't any other cars, so when the light went green, and the other car left, I made a U-turn and continued on my way. That's not my only time on ice, but it was the most memorable.

Feel your pain... I had a Caprice 9c1 I drove for several winters with the posi rear end. When I would get stuck on TRULY icy surfaces I would just have to gun it until the ice was melted.... well maybe I didn't HAVE to, but it sure was a riot.
